Our first crazy 6 months living on a Boat!

Hello Friends! Wow how time does fly. It has already been 6 months that we have lived full time aboard the boat. We have had some epic adventures, some hilarious laughs, a few tears, met fantastic people, but mostly learned more than I could have ever expected in 6 months.

Here is a quick example of just how little I knew when we started out:

October we moved on board full time but then our house sold so we dashed back to California for a week to move out. Then in November we lived behind our friend's home on the boat in Fort Lauderdale as we "prepared & outfitted" everything. Next, at the beginning of December we spent 10 days in the Keys with Captain Richard learning how to actually sail and use our boat. After that we were back in Fort Lauderdale to prep for the Bahamas but we all ended up getting covid for Christmas so we had to change plans and we headed to the Keys and the Dry Tortugas for several weeks.

While we were down in the Tortugas our water marker broke #boatlife so in January we came back to Fort Lauderdale. However, we were unable to get it fixed so we decided to head to Atlantis in the Bahamas for the month of February where we spent our days at the water park and our nights grateful to have a marina where we could take showers and get fresh water. February was Amazing!

At the beginning of March we headed back for what was going to be a week in Fort Lauderdale and that quickly turned into a month. We decided to make the best of it and Matthew took me on date after date now that we have a 12 year old (aka babysitter) on board! The kids and I also explored the parks and museums and beaches while the boat got new enclosures and flooring. Plus, we finally got our water maker fixed...for now anyways.

Needless to say, it has been a wild few months. We went from living in what was our dream house to living on a wonderful but not huge boat. The space adjustment, along with just the new normal day-to-day of living on a floating house, has had its ups and downs. The kids have adapted to this life way quicker and with so much more ease than I expected. Of everyone I think I've had the hardest time with the transition.

After 6 months I can finally say that I'm almost adjusted to life aboard and Pegasus is starting to become my new normal. I miss strange little things from California like my passion fruit vines and favorite salsa but now I'm looking more forward to each new adventure rather than missing what I used to have. What I keep reminding myself is that we are on the quest for our best life & not everything is going to be as comfortable as it once was. When the end of my life arises, I couldn't imagine realizing that I lost sight of really living in exchange for being comfortable.

(And it helps that I'm married to the coolest superhero husband anyone could ever ask for.)

One bizarre aspect to living life onboard a boat is that so much of your life - ok all of your life - is spent watching the weather. We move based on the wind and the waves. This week we are in a holding pattern waiting for the right "weather window" to cross over to the Bahamas. When we were in the Dry Tortugas we had to make a mad dash back to Key West because our water maker broke and the wind/waves forecasted for the following 5 days would make it almost impossible for us to cross back if we hadn't gone that night.

My favorite crossing has been when there were no waves at all (picture glass). We had a crossing back from the Bahamas that was about 3.5 feet and I had to stay up top in the wind in order to not get very sick. So currently, as we are here in Florida in this holding pattern to cross over to the Bahamas, the waves are 6-7 feet... oooooh no way! The amount of time we spend looking at the weather is just one of the many things I never even thought about before Boat Life.

So what's next you might ask?! Great question - I think we will be leaving early April to set sail for Puerto Rico. We plan to spend about 2 months working our way down the Thorny Passage. Florida to the Bahamas, down to Turks & Caicos, on to Dominican Republic, and then finally crossing over to Puerto Rico where the kids will get to meet their new island home.

We will try to share our adventures more often here with you but also check out our instagram page for even more pictures & videos.

Sending all our love!!!
